Electric mattresses are usually imported from Japan, Taiwan, and mainland China, with prices ranging from HK$8,800 to over HK$20,000, depending on size, design, and place of origin. Before purchasing your own electric mattress, be sure to consider these six key factors!

① Sizes

• As electric mattresses are imported products, it is important to measure the dimensions carefully. For instance, Japanese-made electric mattress is 97 x 195 cm (approx. 3.3 x 6.4 feet); since they are longer than standard single beds found in Hong Kong, they may not fit your bed frame.
• However, there are electric mattress specifically customized for the Hong Kong market that fit most local bed frames—including sizes such as 2.5 x 6 feet, 3 x 6 feet, and 4 x 6 feet. To ensure a perfect fit, be sure to accurately measure the space in your room and the area where the bed will be placed before purchasing.

② Design

• Electric mattresses on the market generally fall into two categories—single-layer and dual-layer—offering similar functionality.
  
• Single-layer electric mattresses are slightly thinner (approximately 8 inches) due to the internal motor, though the range of motion for the backrest elevation may be more limited; additionally, because the mechanism creates a hollow space behind the back without extra support, the mattress may feel slightly unstable if shaken vigorously while the backrest is raised.
  
• Dual-layer electric mattresses feature a two-part design: the base houses a concealed motor and a sturdy metal frame, while the top consists of a replaceable, dual-sided mattress (offering varying firmness levels). Consequently, they are slightly thicker—around 9 to 10 inches—but offer the advantages of smooth elevation and excellent support.

③ Hygiene & Cleaning

• Since the fabric of electric mattresses resembles that of standard mattresses, proper care is essential. Single-layer electric mattresses, in particular, are difficult to clean; therefore, it is important to prevent them from getting wet or soiled, as this could impair their functionality. You might consider using a waterproof fitted sheet and waterproof pillowcases to prevent spills or stains from seeping into the mattress.
  
• In contrast, the top layer of a dual-layer electric mattress is replaceable, making it relatively easier to keep clean.

④ Flexibility / Practicality

• For couples sharing a double bed where one partner requires the adjustable elevation function of an electric bed, the existing mattress can simply be replaced with a combination of an electric mattress on one side and a standard single mattress on the other; this allows the original bed frame to be retained while accommodating both sleepers. Alternatively, both sides can be fitted with electric mattresses, enabling independent adjustment for each person and greater autonomy.
  
• Mattress replacement: Users with specific needs can easily swap the top layer of a dual-layer electric mattress for a thinner mattress (2 inches thick), an anti-bedsore pad, or an air mattress.
  
• Adding bed rails: Compatibility depends on the specific model; however, dual-layer electric mattresses generally allow for the flexible installation and removal of bed rails as needed.
  
• Adding bed legs: If no bed frame is available, purchasing bed legs allows the electric mattress to be placed directly on the floor, eliminating the need to buy a new bed frame.

⑤ Order Lead Time / Product Warranty

• As electric bed bases are imported products, some retailers only accept pre-orders, which can take 2–3 weeks to fulfill; if you need one urgently, be sure to clarify the expected delivery time before purchasing.
  
• The standard warranty period for electric bed bases is typically 2–3 years (covering the motor and frame, with 1 year for the remote control); you should check the warranty terms carefully to see if there are additional charges for services such as on-site visits.

⑥ Handling

• Electric mattresses look just like standard mattresses and are easy to move should they no longer be needed. Two-layer electric mattresses are even more convenient to manage; simply replacing the top layer allows for continued use, avoiding the need to discard the entire unit and making them a more eco-friendly choice.
