How to Measure and Adjust Your Walking Stick

How to measure walking stick height
- Ask the user to put on the shoes they normally wear outdoors. Have them stand upright with their shoulders level, arms relaxed at their sides and eyes looking forwards.
- Measure from the user's wrist to the floor. Use this measurement as a starting point for the walking stick's height.
If the user's left leg is weaker or injured, the walking stick is generally held in the right hand, and vice versa. If there is no affected leg, the user may prefer the hand they normally use. Ask a doctor or therapist which side is appropriate if you are unsure.

How to adjust the walking stick
Some adjustable walking sticks have a locking collar or safety screw. Loosen it first, then press the metal adjustment button while sliding the lower section up or down to the desired height. Make sure the button clicks securely into place and tighten the collar or screw again.
Hold the walking stick upright, check that its height feels comfortable, then try walking a few steps. If the user feels unsteady or uncomfortable, seek advice on the fit and technique.
How to use a folding walking stick
These steps apply only to a walking stick designed to fold:
- Remove it from its bag and hold the handle. Allow the sections to extend carefully and connect into a straight stick.
- Keep it a suitable distance from your body as it opens so the sections have room to extend.
- Adjust it to the user's suitable height and check that all sections are securely connected.
- To store it, carefully separate and fold the sections. Secure them with an elastic band or strap before placing the stick in a bag. Take care not to pinch your fingers.
Important note
This guide provides general information. A walking stick that is the wrong height or used incorrectly can be uncomfortable and may affect how the user walks. If the user has a particular injury or mobility condition, follow the advice of their doctor or therapist.
