An Electric Mattress for Easier Access After Discharge

Choosing a bed for easier access at home after discharge

For some older users, and for users recovering from orthopaedic surgery or living with back or joint discomfort, getting into and out of bed can be one of the hardest parts of the day. Reduced strength may make it difficult to sit up, turn over or get up during the night without help.

If space at home is limited and you would rather not replace furniture or renovate the bedroom, a home-style electric mattress may be worth considering.

Depending on the model, an electric mattress may fit on a compatible existing bed frame. A remote control lets the user change the angle of the back and leg sections, which may help them find a comfortable position for resting or sitting up. Check the exact mattress dimensions, bed-frame compatibility and the user's transfer needs before ordering.

Some models can be fitted with an optional bed rail or support handle. This may offer a useful handhold, but a rail is not suitable for everyone and cannot guarantee that a fall will be prevented. Ask a healthcare professional for advice if the user is at risk of falling or becoming trapped against a rail.
